Chapter 5
A Painful Relief
Alberto Gilardino was walking along the corridor heading to the dinning hall. When he arrived there, he saw most of the players, or maybe all of them, were sitting there and already eating their breakfast. The air in the room was so quiet, no one was talking and everybody was just focused on their food. Seedorf was the only one reading the newspaper.
Gila walked ahead to where he usually sits, next to Oliviera.
“Good morning” he said. “Good morning” Oliviera answered, smiling slightly.
Gila sat next to him, and he began eating his sandwich along with tea, the way it always was. He looked on the other side and saw Kaka talking to Seedorf about something in paper, probably about yesterday’s match and their failure. Kaka noticed then that Gila was looking at them, and he smiled and waved at him, then he continued his conversation with Seedorf.
The players always come back from a match to be more optimistic about the next one, but this time … it was different.
Coach Carlo gave them a whole long speech in the changing rooms yesterday, and ever since then, the team was so quiet, and they weren’t talking a lot. Coach admitted that the match was the worst he had ever seen … he said that the team played so badly, apart from some players who were at least trying. He said that they were weak and they were not empowered with the right spirit, and therefore they ended up losing the match because they were not focused enough.
His talk was different last night, Gila had to admit … but whatever he said, the team will regain his structure. He finished his breakfast and then headed for his room to change for their morning training.
When he was done, Gilardino headed for the field where a few of the players were arriving. Kaka waved at him to come. Gila ran towards Kaka and stood next to him, waiting for the start of training.
“Are you ok?” Kaka asked, seeing that Gilardino was quiet this morning … more than usual.
“yeah I’m fine … it’s just, you know, what happened yesterday_” “yeah” Kaka nodded, “the game was awful I have to say, but it’s ok … we’ll be in shape again for the next”
Gilardino’s problem is that he always thinks negatively about things, in most occasions, but whenever he talks to Kaka, all that is bothering him turns into something good and positive … it’s always refreshing to talk to Ricky, he knows the right words to say, or the right way to say them.
“Yeah, I think the team is going to show their fullest strength in our next game,” he smiled.
When training was over, Gilardino and Kaka headed for the changing room. After they were done, everyone headed for their rooms. Gila was just about to close his door when Kaka called.
“Alberto … can you come for a second?” he asked.
“Ok” Gila said, throwing his bag inside his room and heading after Kaka to his. When they entered the room was empty.
“Where’s Nesta?” Gila asked.
“Nesta injured, he sleeps in the infirmary” Kaka replied, ushering Gila to sit on the bed. Kaka was fetching his bag for something, then he pulled out an envelop and sat on the bed next to Gila.
“What’s this?” Gilardino asked, looking at the envelop which seams to hold a letter and some other stuff.
“I got this from … from Andriy” Kaka said, looking up into Gila’s eyes. Gilardino’s face was lit up with a smile, “really!” he said, taking the envelop and opening it.
“He wrote to me telling me all about Chelsea … he sent me these photos with some of his teammates when they were going for a tour in London”
Gilardino hesitated, but then pulled out the photos. There he was, on the first one, smiling cheerfully and pointing at the Big Ben behind him.
“Did you see the pictures?” Gila asked, after a moment, Kaka said, “no”.
Gila flipped to the next one, where Sheva was sitting with John Terry and two fan girls on their sides. Next was a picture of Sheva and Ballack talking with their coach next to a lake.
“Who took these pictures?!” Gila said, “Not a very good photographer!” Kaka laughed slightly, then he took the letter from the envelop.
“You didn’t read the letter either?” Gila asked. Kaka shook his head. He opened the letter and started reading.
Dear Ricky,
I’m sorry I haven’t been in contact with you or the rest of the team, I didn’t have the time … but I’m writing to you now, and I hope you and the others are well.
London is great! I enjoyed it here a lot. I really wish you could visit here some time.
Chelsea is a fine club, my teammates and the fans are really nice to me. The weather here is so cold! I have to wear more than one coat to stay warm, but I’m ok with it.
Well, I have to go now, training calls! But I hope to hear from you soon …
Andriy Shevchenko
P.S: I’ve put some pictures Drogba took of me and some other players along with the sights of London in our tour there, they are in the envelop. He couldn’t get very good shots of me, because the place was crowded, but they’ll do, hope you enjoy them.
Kaka finished the letter and put it down on the bed. After a moment of silence, Gila spoke.
“If you didn’t read the letter, then how come you knew about the London tour and the photos?”
Kaka looked up, “I didn’t have time then, I just read his note at the end of the letter”
Gila nodded. None of them wanted to continue with the photos. It was really nice to see their best friend happy and enjoying his time in the pictures, but it was painful enough for them to lose him, let alone seeing photos of him and his ‘new’ mates.
Nevertheless, Gila sighed and then started flipping again.
The next one was of Sheva frowning at something, but his view was being blocked by Drogba’s finger.
“This guy really doesn’t know how to take pictures!” Gila said, and he and Kaka laughed.
It was hard for them to see their friend so far away from them, but it was a really good relief for their hearts to see him and to know that he’s fine … it lifted something heavy off their chests.
